Hospital infections kill more people in this country than aids and breast cancer combined!
It is the 4th largest cause of death in the united states and it's preventable. Here's the most important thing you can do. If your loved one is in the hospital, instead of bringing candy or flowers, bring a canister of bleach wipes and a pair of gloves and wipe all the surfaces right around your loved one's bed at least once a day. Several times a day is even better. Wipe the hand rail, the call button. Amazing that the doctor comes into the room, washes his hands then pulls back that privacy curtain that never gets washed, it's laden with bacteria, so their hands are recontaminated before they ever get to the patient. Make sure that the doctor or the nurse, or whoever is taking care of your loved one, cleans their hands just before they touch your patient rather than just at the entrance to the room.
