"Delight yourself in the Lord
and He'll grant you
the desires of your heart."
Psalms 37:4
I once heard Psalms 37:4 described as somewhat like playing tennis ... you have your part to play in life and God has his ... you cannot play both sides.
So, you just seek what is right and do that. You just be responsible with what you've been blessed with in your life. Love God first, then others as yourself. And remember, love yourself first, then others out of the overflow. It's like when you're in an airplane and the flight attendant instructs you to put your own oxygen mask on first ... then that of your child or others.
A desire in Webster's dictionary is defined as something you wish for, something you cannot obtain yourself. God created you as a human, complete with the "desires of the heart". As long as we are doing what we know we are to and keeping our chosen desires within what God clearly makes acceptable to Him, he'll grant us those desires.
How does a person making decisions know what is the will of God?
The will of God is not meant to be a secret we must uncover. God wants us to understand His will far more than we want to understand it. He always makes His will clear to those who seek it with an obedient heart.
Most of the real problem areas in the question of God's will are settled for us in Scripture. The Bible reveals that it is God's will for all of us to be:
Saved
1 Timothy 2:3-4 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
Spirit-filled
Ephesians 5:17-18 So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit,
Sanctified
1 Thessalonians 4:3-7 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
and that no man transgress and defraud his brother in the matter because the Lord is the avenger in all these things, just as we also told you before and solemnly warned you.
For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification.
Submissive
1 Peter 2:13-15 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, or to governors as sent 1by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. For 1asuch is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men.
Suffering
Philippians 1:29 For to you it has been granted for Christ’s sake, not only to believe in Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
2 Timothy 3:12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.
How does a person making decisions know what is the will of God?
The will of God is not meant to be a secret we must uncover. God wants us to understand His will far more than we want to understand it. He always makes His will clear to those who seek it with an obedient heart.
If all those things are true in your life, you may do whatever you want. Psalm 37:4 says,
"Delight yourself in the Lord; and He will give you the desires of your heart."
That means that if you are conforming to God's will in all the five ways listed above, He will place in your heart desires that reflect His will. So do what you want to do!
